We had an interesting ‘donation’ at Charing Cross Library recently – one of our books, last seen forty-seven years ago in 1966.
Apparently a reader had acquired some books through a book dealer and this was included amongst them. Not wanting the book, and seeing that it said Charing Cross Library in it, he decided to bring it to us.
The book, which is about heraldry, is called The Nature of Arms: An exposition of the meaning and significance of Heraldry with special reference to its nobiliary aspects by the wonderfully named Lt Col Robert Gayre of Gayre and Nigg (KCN, KCMM, MA, DPhil, DPolSc, DSc.). It was published in 1961, added to stock in 1964 and (amazingly) had had 12 issues till June 1966). It still has a pink Charing Cross library label inside.
Those were the days!
We won’t be adding it back to stock at the library. But don’t fret – readers may be reassured that there is still a copy of this tome available for use at Westminster Reference Library.
