Maida Vale Library customers have become used to changes at their library since June 2012… Firstly there was a brief emergency closure when a serious defect to the roof was discovered. Then when it became clear that major works to repair the roof structure was needed, space formerly occupied by the Windmill Montessori Nursery and the Westminster Schools Library Service was used to run a full service from the basement area of the building (see ‘Putting Maida Vale Library back on the map!‘).
Since Christmas 2012, the available floor space in the basement has been re-configured several times as the project to reinstate the nursery and replace the roof moves on apace.
Local residents and visitors to the site will have seen that the whole building is rapidly being shrouded in polythene and a temporary protective roof is being installed.
This will allow repairs to; the roof and support structure; brickwork and rendered concrete as well as a variety of mechanical and engineering works to improve ventilation to the roof area. Afterwards the decorative features and ceiling will be restored and the library decorations made good.
Subject to weather conditions, works are scheduled for completion to:
- the nursery area mid-May
- the ground floor library mid-July, and
- the basement mid-August
- with the project being completed by early October 2013
It’s likely that the library will close briefly around that point so that we can move back upstairs to our original home on the ground floor. Further details will be posted once we have them.
So, please don’t be put off by our outward appearance!
