At Church Street Library we celebrated National Poetry Day at the beginning of the month with a visit from poet Fran Isherwood. The library welcomed 27 Key Stage 2 children from local school Christchurch Primary for the event.
Fran entertained her audience with her own repertoire of silly, amusing and at times gruesome poems on a range of themes including Star Wars, superheroes, giggling girls and rubber duck cargoes.
With her charismatic and engaging performance she captured the children’s imaginations with further poems about “Cosmic Discos”. After her readings she delivered a poetry writing workshop where she inspired the group to work together to produce a poem entitled “Bad Pets”. Fran also did some teaching on the art of Haiku poetry which the children then had a go at themselves, creating their own individual poems around this year’s National Poetry Day theme “Stars”.
All in all a very successful event which we hope to run again!
