To sum up, we thought the novel well written (if not quite as good as her earlier novel), informative, atmospheric, witty, with a well researched feel to the historical and geographical details. Some people thought there too many different strands in the story and too much historical information, while others liked the snippets that were just touched on.
We all agreed that Dunant really brought Venice to life, and Bucino, the dwarf, was a very interesting character. The novel is not judgemental, but the hypocrisy and racism of the time is seen through the eyes of the narrator – Bucino.
Our next book is Purple Hibiscus, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which we’ll be discussing at the next meeting on Tuesday 29 May – come and join us!
