Mayfair Courtesans

In the Company of the Courtesan, by Sarah DunantThe recent meeting of the Mayfair Library Reading Group saw some good discussions about In the company of the Courtesan, by Sarah Dunant.

To sum up, we thought the novel well written (if not quite as good as her earlier novel), informative, atmospheric, witty, with a well researched feel to the historical and geographical details. Some people thought there too many different strands in the story and too much historical information, while others liked the snippets that were just touched on.

We all agreed that Dunant really brought Venice to life, and Bucino, the dwarf, was a very interesting character. The novel is not judgemental, but the hypocrisy and racism of the time is seen through the eyes of the narrator – Bucino.

If anyone wants to read more of Dunant then she has written two other historical novels – Sacred Hearts and The Birth of Venus.

Purple Hibiscus, by Chimamanda Ngozi AdichieOur next book is Purple Hibiscus, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which we’ll be discussing at the next meeting on Tuesday 29 May – come and join us!
